How to identify a replacement caravan shower tray

Caravan Panels · Buying guide

The right replacement shower tray starts with the tray you already have, not just the badge on your caravan. Compare its outline, measurements and waste position before you order, then resolve any uncertainty about trimming, support and compatibility.

Use this guide to build a useful shortlist from our Caravan Shower Trays or Motorhome Shower Trays. It is an identification guide, not a removal or installation manual.

The quick rule: a matching brand or similar photograph is a starting point, not proof of fit. Match the footprint, shape, waste opening and surrounding washroom layout, and ask about anything the listing does not confirm.

1. Record your caravan or motorhome details

Write down the manufacturer, exact model, year and layout, plus any existing tray reference or moulded part number that you can read safely. Keep a photograph of the identification label or relevant paperwork with your notes.

Start in the collection for your vehicle type and use brand collections to narrow the search. Do not assume two vehicles from the same manufacturer use the same tray, or that a product number such as “001” identifies your vehicle model. Compare each candidate with your actual washroom.

2. Use this measurement checklist

Record measurements in millimetres and label them on a simple sketch. Choose a fixed viewing direction, for example standing in the washroom doorway looking into the shower, and mark it on your sketch and photos. That makes “left” and “right” meaningful.

  • Overall length and width: measure the outer footprint, including any visible rim or flange. Record the widest points on an irregular tray.
  • Internal shower well: record the usable recessed area separately from the outer dimensions. Do not compare a well measurement with a listing's overall size.
  • Height and rim: record accessible tray height, step height and rim or lip width separately. Keep the listing's own dimension labels alongside your notes.
  • Outline and obstructions: sketch corners, curves, cut-outs, raised sections, toilet areas and the doorway position.
  • Waste opening: record the visible opening diameter where accessible, and the centre position measured from two clearly labelled edges. Note how you measured if the drain fitting hides the hole.
  • Surrounding layout: note wall panels, toilet position and accessible clearances that could affect fit.
  • Unknowns: mark hidden edges, inaccessible pipework and uncertain dimensions as “not confirmed”. Do not guess them from photographs.

Measure only what you can access safely without disturbing the fitted tray, sealant or plumbing. If a vital dimension is concealed, ask how to confirm it before dismantling anything. Product photographs show shape, but are not a reliable scale drawing.

3. Compare the shape and drain position

Shape matters: Caravan Shower Tray 003 illustrates why the full outline and raised sections need checking, not just length and width. This is an example, not a confirmed fit for your vehicle.

Compare the waste position in the same orientation as your sketch. A tray can look similar yet place the drain somewhere different. Do not assume that an existing waste fitting, trap or pipe connection will transfer without checking the opening, connection and available space.

Compare the opening and rim as well as the footprint. Autocruise Motorhome Shower Tray 001 is shown as a product example; confirm model, dimensions and plumbing compatibility before ordering.

4. Check whether trimming is actually permitted

“Trim to fit” is a product-specific detail, not a promise for every replacement tray. The listing for Caravan Shower Tray 003, for example, states that it is trim to fit and that sizes are approximate. That does not establish where or how much it can be trimmed for your installation.

Before buying a tray that needs alteration, confirm which edges may be trimmed, the permitted amount, what finished dimensions are required and whether the changes affect the rim, support or sealing surfaces. Do not cut, drill or alter a tray based only on its appearance. If a listing is unclear, ask about the exact product.

5. Plan for support, not just a matching footprint

Finding a candidate tray does not confirm that the floor beneath it is ready for installation. If the existing tray has cracked, flexed or leaked, have a competent installer assess the underlying condition and support requirements rather than assuming a new tray alone resolves the cause.

Ask for the chosen tray's installation and support requirements, including the waste connection and sealing arrangement. Do not assume that a fibreglass replacement is self-supporting or can be installed in the same way as a different tray. Resolve these points before fitting or making irreversible alterations.

6. Send a useful set of photos

Photograph the full tray from above where possible, then take closer views of the waste, each corner, any raised or toilet section and the surrounding doorway and walls. Include a ruler or tape for context, but send your written measurements too. If a view is obstructed, say so rather than removing fittings just to take a picture.

Before you order: your comparison pack

Keep your vehicle make, model, year and layout; labelled measurement sketch; clear photos; existing part reference if available; and the link to your candidate tray together. Add specific questions about dimensions, drain position, trimming, support and waste fittings.

Contact Caravan Panels with this information if you need help narrowing down the options. Ask about the particular tray you are considering rather than relying on a general brand match.

Find your replacement shower tray

Browse Caravan Shower Trays for caravan replacement options, or browse Motorhome Shower Trays for motorhome options. Open each product page to check its stated material, finish, measurements and fitment information individually.

Shortlist by vehicle type, compare by measurement and shape, then confirm the unresolved details. A few careful checks now are better than discovering a mismatch after delivery or alteration.
